Does anybody know why my IconX is taking up all my CPU. It all started Yesterday after having problems with WB5 beta and the Select Data Source Crap, but that's another story. Anyway I like IconX for the large icons and effects but I had to stop using it because it was taking up all of my CPU and slowing my computer to a crawl. Is there an easy fix for this? And again is was working fine until WB5 crap out yesterday and trew all of the Object Desktop Programs out of wack, including Widgets, IconPackager, and IconX with I still cannot fix together with WB5 beta.

I do not know if there is an easy fix, due to your mentioning of the data source issue with WB5 beta.

The first thing I would try is clearing the IconX cache (done by deleting the IconX cache folder).

Normal procedure for clearing cache is:

1 - Save current theme

2 - Unload the program in question

3 - Go to the correct folder and delete the program cache folder, all of which are located in "C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Stardock" folder (note - the Local Settings is a hidden folder)

4 - Restart the program, which will now start with the default settings and thus allow you to troubleshoot the programs functionality at nominal settings.

For a mini tutorial on clearing the cache, you can go here http://corkyo.wincustomize.com/Articles.aspx?SID=5463&AID=82461

For troubleshooting purposes, you may want to unload all programs except the Firewall and Anti-Virus, and return Windows to the default theme during the testing of the suspect program. This will allow you to narrow down the process or program that is using up the CPU cycles.

Again, this would be step #1 in troubleshooting, and Uninstall/Reboot/Reinstalling would be the last resource. Other steps would be available from the various people here at WC who wish to help.

You may have a large graphic image on your desktop (.bmp, .jpg, .png, .tif, .gif) Iconx will try to convert it into a visible Icon and I have at times had the larger ones (6+mb) crash Iconx completely. The medium size ones will bog down the CPU as you cover and uncover them.

Lantec, are saying that Iconx likes to make believe that your desktop image (background) is an icon that needs wow-effects?

don't think so. it's more like iconx likes to make believe a pic saved to your desktop is an icon that needs wow effects.

OH. Maybe I should use IconX to find out what can go wrong with it...
